Atkinson's fifth season with Darlington was again unfortunately dogged by injury problems and he did not make a first team start until October. Alas, further injury problems limited his involvement after the turn of the year and he only returned for the last half dozen games of the campaign, when his ability to hold the ball in midfield and prompt the attack was again apprecia-ted. He was entrusted with penalties and slotted home four during his spells in the side.
Atkinson retired in August 2002 due to a knee injury.
