Allen took advantage of the departure of Lee Ashcroft from Grimsby Town to establish himself as a regular in the line-up in the early part of the 2000-01 campaign. Unfortunately he then suffered an injury in the match at Watford in November that developed into tendonitis, leading to a long spell on the sidelines. He eventually returned to the team in March but his hopes of playing a role in the Mariners struggle to remain in the First Division were then dashed by an achilles heel injury in only his second full game back. He is a lively striker whose speed in the box, and accuracy in front of goal were sorely missed in 2000-01.
Allen joined Peterborough United on a four month contract in August 2002 before moving on to Bristol Rovers.
