Bjarke began the 2000-01 campaign with a niggling groin strain sustained the day before the season started and this kept him out of action for a month. His recovery was only brief, but on his second comeback, he scored an injury-time winner against Norwich that proved to be his only goal of the season. Very quick on the ball and with fast feet he struggled through to the end of the campaign, making short substitute appearances thus delaying an operation on his injured hip until the summer. Unfortunately the operation was not successful and he had to retire from the game in October 2001. Bjarke is the twin brother of Leicester's Arnar Gunnlaugsson.
