A regular outside right for Arsenal for a spell, he lost his place to Jackie Mordue and transferred to Blackburn. He went on to be an important manager in the history of Genoa, leading then to victory in the Italian Championship in 1923 and 1924. He moved on to manage Roma, Napoli, AC Milan and Athletic Bilbao before returning to Genoa in 1937 for another long stint in charge.
