Full name is: Roberto Luis Gaspar de Deus Severo.
Beto is a pacy central defender who is just beginning to establish himself in the Portuguese national team.
At club level, he began with Uniao Lamas and Campomaiorense before joining Sporting Lisbon in 1996.
A regular in the team that won the Portuguese League title in 1999-2000, he made his full international debut in September 1997 against Germany and he went on to make the squad for the Euro 2000 finals.
An uncompromising centre back who can play at right back if needed, Beto had the consolation of scoring one of Portugals' goals in their surprise 3-2 defeat by USA in their first game of the 2002 World Cup finals.
In their last game, he was one of two Portugal players sent-off in the 1-0 defeat by the Korea Republic.
