Diomede made his Liverpool debut in the away leg of the UEFA Cup tie against Rapid Bucharest in September 2000 and his Premiership debut against Sunderland nine days later. However, following a rather unconvincing display in the return match with Rapid, he played virtually no part in the rest of the campaign save for a brief substitute appearance at Manchester City in February. In fairness it should be stated that he was sidelined with knee and cartilage injuries for two months but even when available he was not called upon.
