Townsend made excellent progress at Wycombe Wanderers in 2000-01 although he was used sparingly by manager Lawrie Sanchez. Mostly employed in the second half of the campaign he gave a mature display in the FA Cup sixth round tie at Leicester and won more praise for his semi-final performance against Liverpool. He is a gutsy young right back.
