England international Barry had made over 200 appearances for Sunderland prior to his highly successful stint at Liverpool.
With Liverpool he was a 1st Division Championship winner in 1988 and 1990, FA Cup winner in 1989 and League Cup runner-up in 1987.
With Newcastle United, 1st Division Champion 1993.
He returned to the north-east to become Kevin Keegan's reliable right-back in the United team that won the First Division Championship then performing superbly as the Toon became a force in the Premiership.
