Nicholson signed for Scottish giants Rangers in July 1995 but, although he made a handful of senior appearances at Ibrox, he was never able to win a regular place in the line-up.
He elected to move on in the 2000 close season, signing for Dunfermline Athletic for whom he has been a regular in the first team.
Having been previously capped by Scotland at Under-21 level, he stepped up to win his first full cap in the friendly with Poland in April 2001.
Earlier in his career, Nicholson appeared at right back but in recent seasons he has made the switch to a role on the right-hand side of midfield.
Nicholson joined Preston North End in July 2008 with a two-year contract that was extended to June 2013 in May 2011 before he was made available for transfer in May 2012.
