McConnell suffered a horrific facial injury in a pre-season friendly that required over four hours of surgery and caused him to miss the start of the 2000-01 campaign for Exeter City. He then spent two months on loan at Dr Martens League club Weston-Super-Mare before returning briefly to the Grecians' first-team squad in December. He is a right wing back or full back.
