Preece joined Northampton Town from Evesham.

After four years in charge at Gigg Lane, his contract as Bury's player / manager was terminated in December 2003. On playing terms only, he was quickly snapped up by Carlisle United with a contract to the end of the 2003-04 season. It was later extended for a further season.
