Oakes was a regular in Derby County's successful reserve side in 2000-01 before being thrown headlong into the senior team and a battle against relegation after Mart Poom suffered a shoulder injury against Charlton Athletic.
He made his debut in the home game against Sunderland when he sealed victory with a stunning save in the closing minutes.
A series of steady performances in the next half-dozen games impressed all, before his season was cut short when he suffered a medial ligament injury to his right knee in the away game with Coventry City.
Oakes was made available for transfer by Derby County in May 2004.
He joined Walsall in March 2005 with a contract to June 2006.
Oakes joined Swansea City in August 2006 with a one-year contract.
He joined Darlington in July 2007 in a two-year deal.
