A regular in the Burnley team for five years, Andy started the 2000-01 season well enough as the Clarets surprised the First Division with their early results.
However, manager Stan Ternent then restructured the strike force using Glen Little or Graham Branch as the supply line to the sometimes-isolated Andy Payton and, when Ian Moore arrived from Stockport, Andy moved on to Stoke City.
A City supporter in his younger days, he quickly won over the fans with an honest, hard-working style and established a promising partnership with Peter Thorne.
He was hampered by some niggling injuries but remained a first-choice at the Britannia Stadium.
Andy joined Bradford City in December 2004 with a contract to June 2006.
He joined Shrewsbury Town in July 2006 in a one-year deal.
