A skilful and solid central defender with a lot of potential, he was given the chance to prove himself at international level when Luiz Felipe Scolari chose him for Brazil's first three friendly matches of 2002.
He grabbed the opportunity with both hands, scoring three goals in the process (including a brace against Iceland), to claim his ticket for the World Cup.
