Armstrong featured briefly in Worthington Cup action for Middlesbrough before grabbing the chance of regular first-team football with a move to Ipswich Town in December 2000.
He made his debut in the tremendous win at Liverpool and his first goal soon followed when he sealed a win against Southampton.
As a striker, he is an unselfish runner who shields the ball well and is good in the air, with a goalpoacher's instinct for being in the right place at the right time.
He scored eight goals for Ipswich but there were none sweeter than the two he scored on his return to the Riverside Stadium which enabled Town to beat his old team.
Both came within five minutes of the restart, the first a 25-yard volley and the second a deft flick from Stewart's cross. The home fans gave him a standing ovation when he left the field.
Armstrong was made available for transfer by Ipswich Town in April 2003 but was taken off the Portman Road list in September 2003.
Armstrong joined Darlington in September 2004 with a three-month contract which was subsequently extended to the end of the season.
He later joined Rushden & Diamonds in October 2005 in a three-month deal.
Armstrong returned to Darlington in August 2006 with a one-year contract.
