Alou Diarra began at junior club Louhans-Cuiseaux in the French Third Division.
He left to join German giants Bayern Munich in 2000 but could not break into the first team despite being a member of the French Under-20 squad for the World Youth Cup in 2001.
He was snapped up by Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of the 2001-02 season.
Alou join RC Lens in June 2005 with a four-year contract.
He joined West Ham United in July 2012 with a three-year contract that was cancelled in July 2014.
Alou joined Charlton Athletic in February 2015 with a contract to June 2015 that was extended to June 2016 in April 2015 and to June 2017 in May 2016 before it was cancelled in August 2016.
