Tall, craggy centre-half, the mainstay of the defence (1946-55), missing only 9 games in 9 seasons. A rock. Injured in the D-Day Landings. Allenby made his League debut for United on 2 September 1939 at Charlton, only for the season to be abandoned the following day as war was declared. Converted by Matt Busby fcrom an unconvincing wing half into a dominant stopper centre half, he won a League title (1952) and FA Cup (1948), United's first trophies for about 40 years. Late in his career he was capped twice by England.
