Aliou Cissé's senior career began with Lille and Sedan before a move to Paris St Germain in the summer of 1998.
A regular in the team that were runners-up in the French League in 1999-2000, he was rarely selected the following term and was told he would be allowed to leave the club when his contract expired.
After an unsuccessful trial at West Ham United, he joined Montpellier in August 2001 on a year's loan with a view to a permanent move.
He is an uncompromising defender, possessing great pace, is good on the ball and a tough tackler.
His talent led to him becoming the Senegal captain.
Aliou played in the Premiership in 2002-03 after PSG agreed a £1.5million fee with Birmingham City. He joined Portsmouth in August 2004 with a two-year contract.
