Smertin began his career at Dinamo Barnaul and played at Zarya Lugansk and Uralan Elista before signing for Lokomotiv Moscow in 1999.
He made his international debut in 1998 and has played at wingback, centre half and central midfield for the national team.
At club level, he was Russian Player of the Year in 1999 and a member of the team that won the Russian Cup twelve months later.
He subsequently joined Bordeaux in June 2000.
Described as an investment for the future after joining Chelsea, he was immediately loaned out to Portsmouth then to Charlton Athletic in 2005-06.
Smertin joined Fulham in January 2007 with a contract to June 2009 that was cancelled in September 2008.
