Smith featured regularly for Port Vale in 2000-01 and was an ever-present in the LDV Vans Trophy run. He scored the club's first goal in their opening round tie against Notts County and went on to gain a winners' medal when he appeared in the final against Brentford, a match that was undoubtedly one of the highlights of his career.

He is a skilful left winger who causes havoc among opposition defenders with his pace and jinking runs.

Smith moved on to Reading for the 2001-02 season but was transfer listed at the end of the term.
