A long-term target of Kevin Keegan, Alex became a regular substitute at Newcastle as Andrew Cole's cover. Alex appeared for Dundee United against Celtic on the opening day of the 2000-01 season but after a handful more appearances for the Tannadice Park club he moved south to join York City in September. Although affected by niggling injuries he managed two goals for the Minstermen, scoring on his home debut against Mansfield and netting a real screamer in the FA Cup second round tie against Reading.

Alex's contract at York City was cancelled in March 2003. After a brief stint at Pickering Town, he joined Spennymoor United as player / manager.
