Aguinaga equalled Luis Enrique Capurro's caps record in Ecuador's first game in the Far East against Italy - their first-ever game in the World Cup finals - then broke the record when he came on as a sub in their second game against Mexico and became the first Ecuador player to win 100 caps in their final group game against Croatia.
Arguably the country's greatest-ever player, the veteran midfielder may well have to settle for a place on the bench in the Far East. Having made his club debut for Sport Quito as a 16 year-old, he has spent most of his career with Necaxa who he joined in 1989. The highlight of his long association with the Mexican club was his superb performances in the 2000 World Club Championships.
