A product of the Roma youth system, Alessandro had a trial at West Ham United between February and July 2001 and was due to sign for them but was prevented from doing so because of problems with his registration.
As a result of an administrative error with his registration while at Roma, he became a free agent and signed for Harry Redknapp who had taken him on trial at West Ham United but who was now at Portsmouth in August 2001.
He was a first team regular until a 5-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion in February 2002 and did not appear again that season.
