Rated as one of the brightest prospects in Serie A when he moved to Newcastle United for £4.3million, Alessandro's assured control and clever use of the ball soon impressed the Tyneside public but was not to find favour with manager Ruud Gullit.

The Italian defender's 2000-01 season was symptomatic of Everton's injury-troubled campaign.

After a solid debut at Leeds United on the opening day of the season, he lasted just 38 minutes of his first home game against Charlton Athletic before bowing out with a hamstring injury.

After shaking off that problem, Alessandro lasted just six minutes of his next appearance before pulling up with cruciate knee ligament damage - and then spent six months on the sidelines.

In his few first-team forays, he showed the pace and willingness to get forward that Everton lacked all season.

But a campaign to forget was compounded when he received a red card in his comeback game against Manchester City.

A left back, equally at home in central defence and also capable of playing down the right.

Alessandro's contract at Everton was extended to June 2007 in July 2005.
