For someone who has since gone on to carve out a successful career in the football media, Alan could not be accused of being one to seek the headlines during his playing days. Vastly under-rated, he must be regarded as one of the most effective centre-forwards in Arsenal's history yet he rarely received the praise he deserved. His list of honours though – two championships, a FA Cup and European Cup Winners Cup winners medals plus 13 England caps – show that the lanky West Midlander was a force to be reckoned with.
