This hard-working teenager made rapid strides with Sheffield Wednesday in 2000-01, establishing himself as a regular in the first team before his season ended prematurely when he suffered a broken leg in the local 'derby' against Sheffield United in April.
Although primarily right-footed, he was mostly used in a wide-left midfield role where his fiery challenges and all-out commitment were put to good use.
Alan added to his Republic of Ireland Under-21 caps with further appearances against Netherlands, Portugal and Cyprus.
He joined Ipswich Town in January 2008 with a contract to June 2011.
