A Wales international who was born in Germany, Alan learnt his trade at Newcastle United.

He was given his chance under Ossie Ardiles but was subsequently largely restricted to the shadow squad.

With just three substitute appearances, it would seem that Alan was very much a fringe member of the Fulham squad in 2000-01.

However, nothing could be further from the truth as he was on the bench for twenty games and two of his appearances helped clinch vital wins for the Cottagers.

He came on to replace the injured Sean Davis in midfield at Gillingham when the score was 0-0 with 23 minutes left, played really well and Fulham scored two late goals.

In the six-pointer at Blackburn Rovers, he took over from the red-carded Rufus Brevett at left back and had an absolute stormer.

Fulham were a goal down at the time and went on to win 2-1 and virtually clinch promotion.

The versatile defender skippered the reserves to the Avon Insurance Combination title and the regular defenders knew that they needed to be right on top of their game all the time to keep him on the bench.

He joined Grimsby Town on loan in October 2001.
