A regular in Liverpool's reserve team in 2000-01, Alan joined Crewe Alexandra on loan in March to gain some valuable experience of first-team football.
Initially used as cover for Neil Sorvel and Kenny Lunt, he made his debut from the subs' bench against Crystal Palace and scored his first senior goal with a close-range effort in the 2-1 win over Gillingham.
He impressed in his spell at Gresty Road and featured regularly in the closing matches before returning to Anfield.
Alan joined Milton Keynes Dons in August 2007 with a one-year contract that was extended to June 2009 in December 2007.
He joined Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2009 in a two-year deal that was extended to June 2012 in August 2011.
Alan joined Swindon Town in July 2012 with a two-year contract.
