Out of contract at Tranmere Rovers, Alan chose to move to Sporting Lisbon where he found it difficult to break into the side, although one of his rare appearances came in a European Champions' League game against Real Madrid.
He returned to Blackburn Rovers on loan in December and went on to produce some fine performances to assist the club in their bid for promotion.
A very skilful and imaginative midfield player, he impressed with a fine first touch and some excellent distribution.
Alan joined Wigan Athletic in February 2004 with a contract to June 2007.
After a loan spell, Alan joined Burnley in June 2006 with a three-year contract.
He re-joined Tranmere Rovers in July 2009 in a three-year contract that was cancelled in July 2011.
