A hard-tackling defender with a powerful shot and attacking prowess. Faced with the tricky task of replacing Frank Clark, Alan became one of the St James' Park favourites of the seventies - especially when he was steaming down the left wing.
With Liverpool he won the 1st Division Championship in 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983 and 1984, League Cup in 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984 and European Cup in 1981 and 1984.
