At the age of 42, Alan signed non-contract forms for Swindon Town in December 2002 to provide cover for reserve keeper Craig Farr. At the time, he was the Robins' goalkeeping coach. He subsequently provided back-up for Oxford United's keepers also on a non-contract basis.
