After missing a large part of the 1999-2000 season through injury, Alain came back into the Newcastle United team in 2000-01 and began to forge a solid partnership with Aaron Hughes in the centre of the defence.
However, he continued to attract injuries, suffering a broken nose against Charlton Athletic and a broken hand against Chelsea.
It was something of a surprise when he put in a transfer request and in March and moved on to Fulham for a substantial fee.
He eventually made his debut at the end of April but featured in only a handful of games before the end of the campaign.
A big strong centre half who likes bringing the ball out of defence, he is particularly effective as a man-to-man marker.
Alain's contract at Fulham was extended to June 2006 in February 2004.
