Williams missed the start of the 2000-01 campaign at Reading after suffering a knee injury during the pre-season and, soon after resuming his place in the first team, he was carried off with an injury to his other knee during the game at Bristol City in October.

He bravely fought back to appear in the Play-Offs, only to endure the heartbreak of defeat in the final by Walsall at the Millenium Stadium.

A reliable and committed central defender who is particularly effective in the air, Williams was made available for transfer by Reading in October 2004 and joined Coventry City with a contract to June 2007.

He was made available for transfer in May 2006 and joined Swindon Town in July 2006 in a one-year deal.

Williams was named caretaker manager of the Robins on 25 October 2006 following Dennis Wise's departure from the County Ground.

Williams's playing contract at Swindon was extended to June 2008 in May 2007.
