Tanner found it difficult to win a place in the Colchester United line-up in 2000-01 due to the abundance of central defenders on the club's books and was restricted to just a handful of first-team appearances.
He moved on to Ryman League club Canvey Island in January and appeared as a substitute in their FA Trophy Final victory over Forest Green in May.
