Reed was regularly paired alongside the experienced Neil Aspin in the centre of defence for Darlington in the first half of 2000-01, but when Aspin left just after Christmas he found himself relegated to the subs' bench. He is now a fairly experienced defender himself having made over 100 league appearances for the Quakers and can always be relied upon to stand in very capably wherever he is asked to play. Reed is strong in the air and reads the game well.
