Oliver was challenging strongly for a regular first-team place with West Bromwich Albion at the beginning of last season but was then sidelined by a knee ligament injury in November. He subsequently suffered further problems when he required an emergency operation for a ruptured appendix and it was not until early March that he returned to full fitness. A determined and hard-working midfield player he has signed a new contract that will keep him at The Hawthorns until 2003.
