Eaton is a product of the excellent Everton youth system, and won the FA Youth Cup with the tean in 1998. He could not establish himself in the first team and moved to Preston North End in June 1999 on a free transfer. He broke his toe in pre-season training, but he made good progress when he returned in the reserves. He made his first appearance for the first team in the Auto Windscreens match against Wrexham. Eaton continued to develop and made an impressive full debut at left back in the FA Cup third round tie against Stockport. The consistent form of Rob Edwards restricted his further involvement, although he also made the line-up in the final game of the regular season against West Bromwich Albion. He did not make the braekthrough in 2001-2002 but was a regular member of the first team squad.A young left-sided player his pace, strong tackling and positional play in both defence and wide midfield indicate he has considerable potential.

Following two loan spells, Eaton joined Mansfield Town in March 2003 for an undisclosed fee. His contract ran up to June 2004.
