Umit is the ultimate in versatility having played at every position apart from goalkeeper for his former club side Galatasaray. He was born in Germany and played for Waldhof Mannheim before moving to Turkey to play for Apyonspor, Diyarbakispor and Genclerbirgli before signing for Istanbulspor in 1994. He made his international debut in April 1996 and has been a regular ever since. At club level he joined giants Galatasaray in 1996 but left to join former coach Fatih Terim at Inter Milan in September 2001 but after the coach was sacked his first team chances diminished and he returned to Galatasaray on loan. He played at the 2000 European Championship Finals and will be the starting player on the right midfield in the World Cup finals.
Already a familiar figure with his mohican haircut, Umit attracted further attention with his superb volleyed goal as Turkey beat China 3-0 in Seoul to qualify for the last 16. He then headed home the only goal of the game against Japan as the Turks qualified for the quarter finals for the first time.
He played in all seven of Turkey's games in the 2002 World Cup finals.
