This was Wolverhampton Wanderers' fourth successive defeat in all competitions and they hadn't scored in any of the last three. Wolves had won at Stoke City and Liverpool in this season’s FA Cup run. Not since winning the trophy in 1960 had they knocked out more top division teams in the same season (four).
