A rather lack-luster encounter livened up as the game progressed. Gareth McAuley was unfortunate to put the ball into his own net from a Gareth Bale cross and Wales managed to hang on for the victory. Like the only other time that they had played at a major tournament (the World Cup in 1958), Wales had reached the quarter-finals.
