Uruguay had now won their opening four games at the World Cup finals for the first time since 1930 when they won the first-ever World Cup. Uruguay failed in their attempt to become the first South American nation not to concede a goal in their first four games of a World Cup finals since Brazil in 1986. Excluding penalty shoot-outs, Portugal had now lost two of their last 18 games at major tournaments (won eight). Edinson Cavani's opening goal was Uruguay's earliest goal in a World Cup finals game since Antonio Alzamendi scored after four minutes against West Germany in Queretaro in 1986. Cristiano Ronaldo had now equalled the record held by Germany's Bastian Schweinsteiger for the most appearances at the World Cup finals and European Championship finals (38). This was only the third-ever meeting between Uruguay and Portugal and the first since 1972.
