Manager Michael O'Neill took the brave decision to make five changes to the opening game defeat to Poland and this encounter remained scoreless at half-time with few chances created. Shortly after the break, veteran defender Gareth McAuley met a Oliver Norwood cross perfectly and headed Northern Ireland into the lead. Referee Pavel Kralovec brought the players off the Stade de Lyon pitch for a couple of minutes due to a heavy hail storm. Niall McGinn crowned a famous victory with a second goal with the last kick of the game. That meant that, after only 17 games, ten goals had already been scored in the 87th minute or later at Euro 2016. The draw between Germany and Poland later in the day meant that Ukraine became the first country to be eliminated from this tournament.
