On a sleepy Sunday afternoon in Paris, Luka Modric lit-up a closely fought affair with a spectacular winner. Five minutes before the break, as the ball fell from a damp, overcast sky, the Real Madrid playmaker drew on all of his undoubted technical qualities to net with a right-footed 30-yard volley. To use the vernacular, and in line with what was becoming a common trend at Euro 2016, Turkey keeper Volkan Babacan will have been disappointed. Volkan was beaten again shortly after the re-start but captain Darijo Srna's free-kick struck the bar. Srna, making his 131st appearance for the Croats, scuffed a fine opportunity wide on 53 minutes before Marcelo Brozovic spurned two good chances. The Turkish bar was struck again, this time from a Ivan Perisic header who was later denied by keeper Volkan. Turkey rarely threatened and they had now lost for the fourth time in a row in their opening game at a European Championship.
