Spurs had now conceded only two goals in their opening five Premier League games in this season. They were now unbeaten in their opening five Premier League games of a season for only the second time, having also achieved the feat in 2004-05 under manager Jacques Santini.

This was the fourth season in a row that they had failed to win any of their opening five Premier League games of a season. Adnan Januzaj was the first Black Cat to be sent off in 35 Premier League games since Jeremain Lens against West Ham United on 3 October 2015.
