Switzerland's only win in 11 attempts now against Poland was in a May 1976 when Zbigniew Boniek, the current head of the Polish Football Association (PZPN), was a member of the Poland team. Prior to this game, Germany were the only other nation apart from Poland who had yet to concede a goal at Euro 2016. Switzerland remained without a win in the knock-out stages of a major tournament since the 1938 World Cup. Poland had now reached the quarter-finals of the European Championships for the first time in their history.
