Comments:

League position: 17th Leon Britton made his 500th appearance for Swansea City in this game. Jermain Defoe's 85th minute goal was the first goal scored in the final 15 minutes of a Premier League game at the Liberty Stadium in this season. Kyle Naughton was sent-off after 37 minutes for serious foul play. However, his subsequent claim for wrongful dismissal was upheld and the red card withdrawn. Jack Cork replaced Andre Ayew in the first minute of added time in the second half.

Comments:

League position: 18th Jermain Defoe’s hat-trick was the ninth of his career. It was the fifth hat-trick scored by a Sunderland player in the Premier League; four of them had been scored in away games. The Black Cats were seven points adrift of safety after 19 games. Now, after 21 games, the gap was down to one point with Swansea City being immediately above them. The Premier League’s Goal Accreditation Panel ruled on the following: - Sunderland’s second goal against Swansea City on Wednesday 13th January 2016 was in fact a Federico Fernandez own goal and has therefore not been credited to Patrick Van Aanholt.
