Final league position 2017-18: 18th This result confirmed Swansea City’s relegation to the League Championship. To avoid the drop, as well as winning this game, they needed champions Manchester City to win at Southampton (they won 1-0) plus a ten-goal swing in their favour. This was manager Carlos Carvalhal's last game in charge. City took 17 points in their first nine games under Carlos Carvalhal (won five and lost two) but had now taken three points from the following nine games (drawn three and lost six), including defeats in each of the last five to create a new club record for consecutive defeats in the top division. In his last appearance for the Swans, Łukasz Fabiański saved Xherdan Shaqiri’s 54th minute penalty. After saving one of his first 15 penalties faced in the Premier League, he had now saved three of his last six in the competition. Leroy Fer had now been a squad member of a relegated team in three of the last five Premier League seasons (also Norwich City in 2013-14 and Queens Park Rangers in 2014-15).

Peter Crouch's goal was the 1,000th goal in this Premier League season. He was now City's leading scorer in the Premier League with 45 goals.
