Comments:

League position: 15th Swansea City had now lost their opening two home league games of a season without scoring for only the second time in their history (also 1985-86 against Wigan Athletic and Plymouth Argyle in League Division Three). The Swans had now lost consecutive home Premier League games under manager Paul Clement for the first time. City had now failed to score in three of their four games so far in this Premier League season. Swansea City manager Paul Clement said: "Our preparation was good and the atmosphere around the team was good. We were second best in lots of areas. We pushed to the end but never really created anything and Newcastle were better than us. Any system can be undone whether it is man-to-man or zonal. Both have strengths and weaknesses. It worked well for us last season. We have conceded two from corners this season so the details aren't right. We don't need to change how we defend, just go about our defending in a better way.

League position: 10th Since the start of the previous season, Newcastle United had now won the most away games in the Premier League and Football League along with Chelsea and Exeter City (15 each). Jamaal Lescelles scored his first goal in the Premier League since a 3-0 win against Swansea City at St James' Park on 16 April 2016. This was United's first win in their last 13 away games in the Premier League since a 2-1 victory at Tottenham Hotspur on 13 December 2015. With manager Rafa Benitez recovering from a recent operation, coach Paco Moreno took charge of the team for this game. Newcastle United coach Paco Moreno said: "I feel very happy, very glad for the performance of the players. We expected them to play with five at the back and we realised it was four but everything was as planned. We tried to control their midfielders and attack down wide. Jamaal Lascelles has the spirit of a captain, without doubt. He manages everything so well and is involved in all situations."
