In the first season of the Play-Off Final being a single tie played at Wembley, due to financial irregularities, Swindon Town were subsequently denied promotion to League Division One with Sunderland taking their place in the top division instead.
Town were initially demoted to League Division Three but, on appeal, were restored to League Division Two for the 1990-91 season.
