There was a minute’s applause before the match as a tribute to Marton Fulop, a former player with both clubs who had recently passed away, losing his battle with cancer at the age of 32. His parents watched from the stands. After 32 minutes, fans at the Stadium of Light chanted "There's only one Marton Fulop". Sunderland had now lost just one of their last nine Premier League matches against Stoke City (won five). Kick-off: 3.00pm.

Comments:

League position: 17th Following their victory at Crystal Palace earlier in this week, this was Sunderland's third win in their last 17 Premier League games (lost nine). It meant the Black Cats had now won as many Premier League games (three) in six games under new manager Sam Allardyce as they had in 17 under his predecessor Dick Advocaat. Patrick van Aanholt's strike was his first goal in the Premier League.

Comments:

League position: 12th Stoke City had kept five clean sheets in their previous six Premier League games after conceding in each of their eight league games before that run. Only 25 goals have been scored in games involving the Potters so far in this Premier League season (11 for and 14 against); fewer than any other team. Ryan Shawcross' red card was the seventh in 15 Premier League meetings between City and Sunderland.
